Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. As a young girl, Houston started singing professionally in the church of New Hope Baptist in Newark alongside her mom in Chaka K's Im Every Woman in 1978.
